A tribute to the art and history of the handmade book, this modern adaptation of a traditional panel binding is sewn with beads into flossembroidered velveteen. The Art of the Book: A Review of Some Recent European and American Work in Typography, Page Decoration & Binding, was produced by The Studio Ltd in 1914 and was printed letterpress. Embroidered bindings represent a small but important chapter in the history of the book. This binding, produced during a six-month period that averaged two hours/square inch, incorporates Japanese, Czech, and Italian beads into a pattern of gold embroidery. 29 x 21.5 x 3.5 centimeters. Created 2006.

Madelyn Garrett, BA, English, MA, Art, is the head of the Rare Books Division at the University of Utah J. Willard Marriott Library. In 1995, she organized the Book Arts Program, designed to showcase the library’s outstanding rare book collections and to integrate their use into campus curricula and the community. She has lectured extensively on the history of the book and its continuing relevance and value to modern society. She organizes local and statewide bookmaking opportunities, including classes, workshops, exhibitions, lectures, and community outreach programs.
