Eikoh Hosoe/Charles Baudelaire, Flowers of Evil, 2006

This book contains photographs by Eikoh Hosoe juxtaposed with poems by Charles Baudelaire, printed in French and English. The photographs are tipped onto hinged black paper. The black paper, along with the white text paper is made by Twinrocker Handmade Paper. The book is sewn onto flattened cords. The covers are made of sheet PVC, which has been spray painted with a black, catalyzed urethane paint. The Japanese signature of Hosoe is silkscreened onto the front cover with black epoxy ink. The spine is a black, chrome-tanned calf skin. The book, along with an extra photograph, is housed in a drop-spine box with a front flap held in place by magnets. This book is one of an edition of seventy-five. It is published by 21st Photography. 46.5 x 39 x 3 centimeters. Created 2006.

Peter Geraty has been binding since 1975, when he worked at Unicorn Press in Greensboro, NC as a binder, typesetter, and printer. In 1977 he moved to Boston and worked in various binderies, including the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University, and at Harcourt Bindery. In 1984 he opened his own studio and currently runs Praxis Bindery in Easthampton, MA where he creates fine bindings, restores and conserves books, and binds privately printed editions.
