Breath Upon Clay

This book is a creation fable based on the Old Testament account of human origins which allows for some experimentation by the Creator while bringing our first parents to life. The book is illustrated by four graphite drawings and an oil painting by Owen, that have been scanned and printed digitally. The text is set in Monotype Erhardt by Michael Bixler of Skaneateles, NY. The titling is Palatino italic. The decorative initials are Cloister, printed in terracotta. The type was printed letterpress by Art Larson of Horton Tank Graphics. The binding uses purple cloth with inset labels and rice paper end sheets. The edition was bound by Sarah Creighton. 24 x 17 x 1 centimeters. Created 2005.

After earning a Master’s degree in Printmaking at Rochester Institute of Technology in 1976, Owen moved to Philadelphia were she and Daniel Tucker established Turtle Island Press. The goal of Turtle Island Press is to produce visual artist’s books that combine the craft of the fine print book with the ideas explored by visual artists using the book as a primary art medium. The work of Turtle Island has been included in national and international exhibitions, and is represented in numerous public collections including Metropolitan Museum of Art, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, National Gallery of Art, and Library of Congress.
