Catherine Stanescu was born in Romania, first a teacher of literature with a degree from the University of Bucharest. Following her emigration to Geneva, Switzerland, she studied bookbinding with Alice Huguenin and Giocomini Picard from 1941 to 1946. In 1946, she and her husband emigrated to the United States. She taught bookbinding at the Craft Students League there from 1951–56, commuting once a week from her home in Virginia until 1956, when she opened her own studio in New York City. Following the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, she returned to her native Romania.
