Charlotte Ullman took up binding in her spare time, taking classes with Jacques Nosco in New York. She also studied binding with Kathryn and Gerhard Gerlach before eventually succeeding Marguerite Duprez Lahey at the Pierpont Morgan Library in 1958. In 1963 she was awarded a Ford Foundation grant, which allowed her to travel abroad and work with colleagues in Toulouse, the Bibliothèque Nationale, and the Ecôle Estienne in France, with Roger Powell, Sidney Cockerell, and at the British Museum in England. She joined the Guild in 1942.
