Karen Crisalli reports that an On-Line Chat took place on America On-Line on May 8. Eleven AOLers spent an hour exchanging information. About an equal number of AOLers "showed up" at Junes chat. If you let Karen know by e-mail that you are interested in joining the group the next time, shell put your name on the list to call. Her E-mail address is KarenC5071@Aol.com. They expect to change the day and time for each session so as to make it available to more people. You do have to be a subscriber to AOL though.
Peter Verheyen has been putting the Newsletter on the Internet and is including information about the Guild and its publications, as was reported in the last issue of this Newsletter. His listserv Book_Arts-L is also growing and now includes over 500 subscribers. Many of them are GBW members.
At long last all copies of the Guilds 75th Anniversary Exhibition catalogue have been sold. Many, many copies of the 80th Anniversary catalogue remain, however. They are now on sale for $5 per copy. Its a beautiful catalogue, so if you dont have one, now is the time to buy.
By the time you read this, you should have received your Guild of Book Workers membership renewal for the 1995-1996 membership year (July 1, 1995 to June 30, 1996). Your renewal payment, and the renewal form, including any corrections or additions, must be received by September 1, 1995 if your most current information is to appear in the 1995 Membership Directory.
Note that if youve just joined the Guild (after May 1, 1995), you are considered a member for the upcoming year (1995-96) and you do NOT need to send an additional membership fee. However you DO need to review the information on the membership renewal form and return it, noting any corrections.
Any member may join any of the regional chapters (New England, New York, Delaware Valley, Potomac, Midwest and Lone Star) for an additional $10 beyond the basic membership. Several additional regional chapters, including the Rocky Mountain and Southern California are in the process of forming. The basic membership for US members is $40; the student rate is $25 (full-time students, for a period of two years only). The basic rate for Canadian members is $47.50; all others pay $60. Two members of the same household may join with a family membership with a single payment. While the household only receives a single copy of each Guild mailing, both members can be separately listed in the Guilds Membership Directory.
All current members will continue to receive Guild publications and other mailings through the end of August, a generous grace period. After September 1, any current members who have not yet renewed will be dropped from all mailing lists. Payment of the annual fee will reinstate any current member for that membership year and all publications issued during that membership year prior to reinstatement will be provided at no additional charge.
Anyone joining the Guild from now through the end of April 1996 will be considered a member for the 1995-1996 year and will receive all publications issued during that year. Anyone joining after May 1, 1996 will be considered a member for the following year unless other arrangements are specifically requested.
This year, members have the option to indicate if they do NOT want their directory information to be made available electronically. If you check this box, none of your directory information will be provided through the Guilds World Wide Web home page presently at http://palimpsest.stanford.edu or any other similar electronic service. Mailing label information will continue to be made available (as mailing labels only) to selected commercial and academic organizations.

Ballots and bios will be sent out for the 1995-96 Executive Committee elections during the summer. Results will be announced at the Annual Meeting which will be held during the Standards Seminar in Tuscaloosa in September. Tim Ely, present Vice-President-at-Large, has resigned. To nominate a candidate for any position, follow the instructions given in the By-laws as printed in the back of your Membership Directory. Names may be sent to the Chairman of the Nominating Committee, Elaine Schlefer, or to the President or Secretary.
Work is progressing on the Guilds next traveling exhibition. This exhibition will feature fine bindings of Peter and Donna Thomas book PAPER. So far about 15 binders have ordered the book, which the Thomass are holding in sheets and offering to Guild members at the substantially discounted price of $190. The exhibition will open in the Fall of 1996 at the University of Rochester and Travel to Scripps College in Claremont and Columbia College in Chicago. Books will be due for jurying in June of 1996.
