The Utah Calligraphic Artists and the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers announce a juried exhibit of members' work to be held at the Vital Arts Gallery located in the new FHP Hospital in Salt Lake City, May 12-July 4, 1997. The gallery will provide advertising in Utah, and a reception to be held May 16 in conjunction with the annual "Gallery Stroll". Items can be offered for sale. The Art of the Book '98, a juried exhibition of work of the members of the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild to celebrate their 15th anniversary, will open in March 1998 at the OCC Craft Gallery, Toronto, and travel for two years. Jurors: Carol Barton, Robert Jekyll and Michael Wilcox. The exhibition will be juried in two stages: Stage One jurying will be from slides; Stage Two from the work itself. The Center for Book Arts invites submissions to its 1997 Poetry Chapbook Competition. The winning manuscript will be announced in April, 1997 and will be awarded with the publication of a letterpressed, limited-edition chapbook designed, printed and bound by artists at the Center, as well as a cash award of $500, and a $500 honorarium for a reading which will be held at the Center for Book Arts in New York City during 1997. The chapbook edition will be limited to 100 signed and numbered copies. Ten copies of the edition will be reserved for the poet, the remaining copies will be offered for sale through the Center for Book Arts. The Fourth Biennial of European Union of Art Bookbinding in the Basque Country endowed with the "Prize of European Art Bookbinding" created by the Cercle de Reliure d'Art de Ciboure, and sponsored by the European Parliament and the Ministry of French Culture, is this year inviting professional and amateur binders in the United States to enter. The exhibition will be held at St-Jean-de-Luz, in southern France, September 14-21, 1997. The book to be bound is "St-Jean-de-Luz/Ciboure: City of Corsairs", a history of the Basque fishermen who took part in struggles against the English, Dutch and Spanish, as well as, with Lafayette, in the American Revolution.
