Honorary Member Stella Patri celebrated her 100th birthday in early November. The Hand Bookbinders of California are planning to make their annual Christmas Party on December 3 a special one in Stella's honor. A founder of the Hand Bookbinders and a long time member of the Guild, Stella has been a major influence in conservation and bookbinding in California.

Priscilla Spitler and Donald Hallock were married on September 21. Donald and Priscilla spent their honeymoon antiquing along Route 66 (Donald deals in antique toys and aviation artifacts). Their route took them from Shamrock, Texas to Holbrook, Ariz. with overnight stays in vintage, (i.e. old) motor courts along the way. Priscilla has spent the time since then teaching and moving. Tim Ely has moved his studio/bindery/classroom into larger quarters. The new address is: 1306 NW Hoyt, #407, Portland, OR 97209; ph: 503/243-6812; Fax: 503/228-7262; e-mail: <axt1221@aol.com> In the new studio Mr. Ely can accommodate up to 5 students at a time in a variety of advanced techniques. Topics range from bookbinding and unique artist books to printmaking. Organized classes are offered and independent studies can be arranged. Details on request. There are also nearby accommodations for a limited number of out of town students. Mr. Ely's recent foray into glass work, sponsored by Bullseye Glass Co. was shown at Glastec '96 in Dusseldorf, Germany in November.

Mark Andersson, book conservator at the University of Washington and 1992 graduate of the bookbinding program at the North Bennet Street School, has received a Fulbright Grant for the study of Scandinavian bookbinding and conservation. The purpose of the study is to better understand the historical structures used in Scandinavia so that books receive proper conservation treatment in the States. Mark is currently studying with Per Cullhed in the conservation lab at Uppsala University. He will also visit other conservation labs in Scandinavian capitols and will return to Seattle next July.

Peter and Donna Thomas, the papermakers in Santa Cruz, Calif., were honored with the 1996 Norman Forgue award, in appreciation of their outstanding contributions over many years to the world of miniature books, at the annual conclave of the Miniature Book Society in San Francisco.
