Exhibition Catalogs

The Utrecht Psalter in Medieval Art, edited by Koert van der Horst, William Noel and Wilhelmina W¸stetfeld. HES Publishers with Universiteit Utrecht and Museum Catharinjneconvent, Utrecht. ISBN 9-0619-4318-3. 270 pp. £75. Hardback. Available in CD-Rom for £25. The catalog of an exhibition held in 1996 in the National Museum of Religious Art in Utrecht, which concentrated entirely on the inXuence this most important book had on western medieval book illumination and production at a time when the illustrated codex was used to proclaim power, patronage and wealth. It was displayed alongside other examples of Carolingian artistic heritage. The manuscript dates from between 816 and 833. It was produced in the monastery of Hautvillers, then under the patronage of Archbishop Ebbo, abbot of the monastery of St. Remy in Rheims, and Librarian to the Emperor Louis the Pious. It has only been publicly displayed twice in recent times.


Videos

Edge Gilding, a documentary made during a New York Chapter visit to the edge gilders R. Marchetti & Bro., Inc. a year ago in their former Soho location in New York City, is ready for sale. The 75 minute video, made by Liza Bear and Coleen Fitzgibbon, documents the edge gilding of Nick Marchetti, the proprietor of the company started by his father and uncle at the beginning of this century. They are the only practicing trade gilders in New York. They have moved from their Soho location to Brooklyn. Fine Hand Bookbinding, Vol. 1, by M. Leroy Chrisman. The 90 minute video, vol. 1 covers numerous repair and restoration techniques. They are discussed and demonstrated and include the "virtually invisible" rebacking technique, making new inner and outer hinges, proper installation of endpapers, and the repair of torn pages. Vol. 2, due out soon, will treat (in great depth) the subject of binding in "Period Style"; touching on such things as proper leathers, papers, headbands and tooling to use on books of different time periods.
