In the current issue of Letter Arts Review, Vol. 13, No. 4, 1997, Karyn L. Gilman is the author of an article entitled "Opportunities in Education". She surveyed accredited and adult education programs across the U.S., Britain, Germany, Switzerland, and The Netherlands. While few art programs focus primarily on lettering, many programs include classes which explore lettering as art. A potential lettering student might gain insights into the teaching philosophies of the program discussed. This is a very interesting and informative article.
Barbara Cash, letterpress printer and proprietor of Ives Street Press in Harrison, Maine, passed away recently after a brief illness. She produced finely printed books which brought intellect and beauty to the world of handmade books. She will be missed.
Correction: In the article on Fran Manola in the last issue, I wrote that Fran studied gilding with Wendy Westover and Donald Jackson. She studied gilding , instead, in a week long workshop with Wendy Gould (Selby) and David Graham in England in 1973. My apologies to Fran and all involved.
