David Bourbeau's work on Late Fire Late Snow: New and Uncollected Poems, poems by Robert Francis, published by Fort Juniper Press, is glowingly reviewed in the June issue of Biblio.
David is a recent victim of the Post Office changes. His address has remained the same: 221 Pine St., but the town name and zip code have been changed. It is no longer Northampton, MA 01060 but is now Florence, MA 01062.
New member Scott Mullenberg has a bindery, retail space (paper, hardbound journals, albums, etc.) and a cafe called Zygot Bookworks & Cafe at 61 Pleasant St., Portland, Maine.
Stephanie Later's work was exhibited in June at HarperCollins Publishers in New York City. The exhibit of artist's books, titled "Commedia Dei Librii", included a wide range of structures and styles, such as accordion, carousel form, miniature and others bound using stones, jewels, ribbons and embroidery. Stephanie graduated from SyracuseUniversity School of Fine Arts, Parsons and the Art Students League. She studied bookbinding at the Center for Book Arts.
Night Street by Barbara Luck, with images by Lois Johnson, assembled in a non-adhesive concertina structure by Claire Van Vliet, published by the Janus Press in 1993 in an edition of ninety, is included in the permanent exhibition of the Library of Congress entitled "Two Hundred American Treasures". Night Street is also illustrated in the book by the same title published by Abrams.
Claire Van Vliet and Pamela Spitzmueller have work on exhibit until October 27 as part of the National Museum of Women in the Arts' "Book as Art Tenth Anniversary Exhibit" in Washington, D.C. Pam's "British Museum Memoir (revisited and revised) is shown in the Spring 1997 issue of the NMWA Magazine.
Awards presented at the Helen Warren DeGolyer Triennial Exhibition and Award for American Bookbinding in Dallas, Texas, May 30, 1997 by the Bridwell Library of SMU went to: Don Etherington for his winning design, and Marky Miles and Jamie Kamph who received Honorable Mention awards. Special Mention awards given by the Craft Guild of Dallas went to David Bourbeau for Technical Innovation, and to Peter and Donna Thomas and Dorothy Westapher.
Noted in the July issue of Biblio is the Society of Czech Bookbinders. The new Society is listed among the Clubs and Societies, with a photograph of Jan and Jarmila Sobota surrounded by a number of their works.
