Chapter News

Lone Star Chapter

Lone Star Chapter member Gayle Young has written an article for their chapter newsletter on "Solvents, Materials and Labels" which discusses the possible hazards of materials we all use and the "Material Safety Data Sheet" that is not always available. Many organic pigments and other art & craft materials have never been tested for toxicity. Gayle gives rules to consider when ordering materials, lists terms used, materials bookbinders commonly use (with comments), and gives references and where to find technical assistance. A copy of this 2 1/2 page article can be obtained from Catherine Burkhard, 6660 Santa Anita Dr., Dallas, TX 75214, with an SASE and $1.

Rocky Mountain Chapter

The Rocky Mountain Chapter newsletter, Book Arts Roundup, for December includes Cole Swenson's report on Dan Kelm's workshop "The Full-Metal Binding" held in Denver in November. Aluminum covers were attached to signatures sewn onto brass rods, making "the finished product....a wonderful mixture of textures: the gleaming industrial surfaces of brass and aluminum, the warmth of paper and silk." Priscilla Spitler will give a 2-day workshop in May in Denver on Millimeter-Style Binding.
