Anthony Hobson ran Sotheby's book department for twenty years, succeeding his father G.D. Hobson, the great historian of bookbinding, in that position. Since then he has established an independent reputation with a series of studies of bookbinding and the history of books generally in renaissance Italy.

The Society of Bookbinders Newsletter, December 1994 Contains regional and national news, rules and regulations of the Society of Bookbinders Competition 1995, articles on "How to Make the Perfect Leather Labels" and on "Conservation of Text Blocks."

Bookbinder, Vol. 8, 1994. Journal of the Society of Bookbinders This yearly publication of the Society is a beautiful publication printed on glossy paper with a large number of color photographs. The cover, in color, shows Paul Delrue preparing leather onlays for the cover of a short listed book for the Booker Prize '94, "The Folding Star" by Alan Hollingsworth. This issue includes:

• Mel Jefferson's account, "The Binding of the Beast", the set book in the 1993 DB bookbinding competition, which won two prizes. His opening paragraphs may give comfort to other binders.

  Prior to binding the `Bestiary' for last year's Bookbinding Competition, I had only ever completed two `design' bindings; one whilst still at college and one over a period of about 18 months after leaving college. During this time I was fortunate enough to meet Paul Delrue whose encouragement and enthusiasm for my work played a very large part in my decision to enter the DB's competition. I am not competitive by nature and I do not consider myself to be very `artistic' so the concept of a competition in which art is such an important factor was, and still remains, anathema to me. However, when my 'Bestiary' was completed I was proud of it and I wanted people to see it. So, what better place to have it exhibited than the British Library?

• "Preserving Skills for Future Generations" contains three pages extracted from "An Introduction to Gold Finishing" by John Mitchell, the second book in The Craftsman's Guide series. It follows his A Craftsman's Guide to Edge Decoration.
• "The Binder and the Private Press in Twentieth Century Britain" by Anthony Dowd includes illustrations in color of the bindings of nine small press books.

Quarterly News-Letter of The Book Club of California, Vol. LIX, No.4, Fall 1994 contains an interesting article on "Pochoir: The Art of Coloring with Stencils" by Adela Spindler Roatcap. Ms. Roatcap gives an explanation and history of the technique. Vol. LX, Number 1, Winter 1994 (95) contains articles on "Peter Koch, Printer" by Carolee Campbell. (Peter's work is on view in a joint exhibition at the NYPL and the SFPL Jan. 19-March 28, and another on his work from 1989-1994 will be shown at the Widener Library at Harvard from May 2 to May 30). Also in this issue is an article by Edward Petko, "The Closing of the University of Southern California Fine Arts Press."

CAN (Conservation Administration News), No. 57, April 1994 CAN is back, after a rocky year. "A Letter from the Editors" on the front page explains the changes.

The past few months have seen many changes in the Conservation Administration News. After the January 1994 issue, publication of CAN was moved to The University of Texas at Austin. On January 15, 1994 the Editor of CAN, Carolyn Harris died. Interim co-editors, Paul Banks and Roberta Pilette, were appointed by Dean Brooke Sheldon until a new Director of Preservation and Conservation Studies can be appointed. The new Managing Editor is Bonnie Orr. Orr holds a Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin in Advertising and Marketing. She has edited a state-wide magazine and several newsletters in the past.

This issue contains Paul Banks' Personal Tribute to Carolyn Harris; Howard P. Lowell's tribute to Bob Patterson, retired head of CAN; a report on the zinc mass deacidification project at HRHRC; preservation reports from several libraries across the country: flooding at the Iowa State University, developing a program for the Joyner Library in Greenville, N.C., and for the New Jersey State Nursing Association, in Trenton; an article on how to move and preserve archive materials.
