Emily Tipps is Binding Instructor and Studio Coordinator at the Book Arts Program and Red Butte Press, at the J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah. She discovered the world of chapbooks and small presses while earning her MA in Creative Writing at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Enchanted by this merging of visual and verbal art, she went on to receive her MFA in Book Arts at the University of Alabama. She has taught courses in creative writing and book arts at the Universities of Alabama and Colorado. Emily is also the proprietor of High5 Press. Using traditional and new technologies and collaborating with visual artists and writers, she engages in all parts of High5’s process—developing design and content, letterpress printing, papermaking and binding. Her limited-edition books are held in collections and exhibited nationally.

The Heart's Horizon: A Refutation, 2012

This original short fiction by Adam Weinstein is bound in dried egg gourd in an accordion that spills like a yolk from between the covers. The story explores the heart as a metaphor for the egg of enclosed--and, when cracked, expanding--horizons. The waxed pages are decorated with sumi ink, walnut dye, and acrylic paint, in a gradation of color implying the darkness inside the egg to the eventual light and brilliance of its release. A mylar window allows the viewer to examine the interior of the curious, egg-like vegetable that is the book's container.
