The Conquest of the Air

Artist Book

Romance of ballooning created from images of old lantern slides distributed on folds of an accordion book made of black Canson paper and Japanese cloth covers. When expanded, multiple views can be seen from different directions. Laced cords pull accordion closed, housed in a slender box.

BEEJ NIERENGARTEN-SMITH is Museum Manager of the new Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum. Since 1974, images from her career in the arts, museums and education have always found their way into her books. Old and new ballooning pictures from the museum's collection gave rise to the creation of a recent series of artists' books on flight.
