hip hop at fifteen

hip hop at fifteen is a diminutive stab-bound flip book that depicts my then 15-year-old daughter performing a hip hop dance. The book includes a full-figure color photograph on the recto of each page, and a cropped sepia-toned negative image on the verso. It seems to me that the colored images describe the dance sequence in “real time,” which is moving rapidly forward into the future as she grows up, while the negative images represent the nostalgia-imbued images stored in my memory of the past, which I revisit as I flip and reflip the pages. Images by Deborah Kogan, text is the chorus to the song “craft” by Blackalicious. 2 x 5.75 x 0.5 inches, 5 x 14.5 x 1.5 centimeters. Created 2007.

As a book artist, she is interested in books as physical objects and as containers of meaning. Website at
