Peggy JohnstonDes Moines, IowaThe Caged Bird's FlingArtist BookAccordion structure with watercolor painting on paper, cut-outs, metallic thread and a ceramic bird. When closed, the bird is seen inside a cage. As the accordion expands, a flight is in pursuit, and the bird is finally seen resting on a tree limb. PEGGY JOHNSTON has employed paper in her art for over 30 years: painted, pulped, poured, printed, pasted, sculpted, woven, cast and sewn. This interest merged with a love of containers when she began making books 12 years ago. "Although they are functional objects in the sense of being containers for ideas, I see my books as art objects." |
