American Academy of BookbindingThe American Academy of Bookbinding offers Fine and Comprehensive Binding diploma programs. The Fine Binding Program concentrates on bindings as fine art and prepares students for making one-of-a-kind bindings ready for competition. The Comprehensive Binding Program specializes in aspects of the conservation and restoration of books, along with established practices for edition binding. John Rylands Research Institute and LibraryFounded by Enriqueta Rylands in memory of her husband, John Rylands, the Library opened in January 1900 as a gift to the people of Manchester. One of Europe's finest neo-Gothic buildings, the Rylands is home to an astonishing variety of rare books, manuscripts, archives, maps and visual materials.
Among the Library's world-class collections are ancient papyri, early European and Chinese printing, Islamic and medieval manuscripts, bibles, and modern archives. These collections, which came to the Rylands as gifts, purchases, and loans, tell stories of global significance. The Rylands embodies Manchester's tradition for ingenuity and innovation. It has grown to be a renowned cultural and academic destination, welcoming readers, researchers, and visitors from around the world. The library also holds bindings exhibited in the 1894 Tregaskis exhibition and its centenary celebration, and many other British fine binders completed for the Earls of Spencer, including Roger Payne (d. 1797) and Charles Lewis (d. 1836), as well as exhibitions by the Designer Bookbinders, UK.

Paper and Book Intensive (PBI)

Paper and Book Inten­sive is an annual work­ing sab­bat­i­cal in the  book arts, paper­mak­ing, and con­ser­va­tion for sea­soned  prac­ti­tion­ers and moti­vated begin­ners. For more than thirty  years, par­tic­i­pants have gath­ered together from around the world for two weeks of daily work­shops to pro­mote unusual lev­els of exchange, knowl­edge and inspi­ra­tion. Tuition includes room, board, and three workshops taught by world-class practitioners.

Funding Opportunities applications are accepted December 1 - 31 each year, and Applications for General Admission open January 1. PBI itself takes place the second half of May at Oxbow School of Art and Artist Residency in Saugatuck, MI.

Rare Book School - University of Virginia

At various times during the year, RBS offers about 40 five-day, non-credit courses on topics concerning old and rare books, manuscripts, and special collections. The majority of courses take place in Charlottesville, but courses are also offered in New York City, Philadelphia, Bloomington, New Haven, and Washington, D.C.

The educational and professional prerequisites for RBS courses vary. Some courses are broadly directed toward antiquarian booksellers, book collectors, bookbinders, conservators, teachers, and professional and avocational students of the history of books and printing. Others are primarily intended for archivists and for research and rare book librarians and curators.
