Resources

The Guild of Book Workers is dedicated to promoting and preserving the art and craft of the book in its many forms. This Resources section serves as a comprehensive reference for practitioners, educators, scholars, and enthusiasts within the book arts community. Our aim is to provide access to essential tools, connections, and knowledge to support the continued practice and appreciation of these time-honored traditions.

Journal

The Guild of Book Workers Journal is published annually by the Guild of Book Workers and contains articles that address our members' interests in the arts and crafts of the book, including traditional bookbinding, paper making and decorating, conservation and restoration, calligraphy, the making of artists' books, and printing. Published continuously since 1962, the GBWJ welcomes submissions from members and nonmembers.

Newsletter

The Guild of Book Workers Newsletter appears 6 times a year. It contains the latest in Guild news, reports from national chapters, reports of conferences and meetings, publication reviews, and more.

Past issues of the GBW Newsletter are available online; however, copies of the most recent issue are available to members only. If you wish to receive issues as they are published, please join.

Standards Handouts & Videos

The Guild of Book Workers still holds a digital collection of recorded presentations from the annual Standards of Excellence in Hand Bookbinding seminar. The seminar began in 1982 and has been recorded since 1984.

These videos document and demonstrate techniques that no print text can describe so thoroughly. More information can be accessed through the Standards Presentation Videos page. Discounts codes are visible to Members when they log in.

Library

The Guild of Book Workers Library contains over 1200 books, journals, videos, and other bookbinding related materials and is a great resource to those studying bookbinding and its related fields.

Since 1986 the collection was held on loan by the University of Iowa Special Collections and was officially donated to the University on May 2, 2022. The decision to donate the collection was driven by the Board's belief that the collection would receive better long-term care and be more accessible to library patrons. The University’s collections are public, and can be accessed by anyone, but will also prove very useful to individuals studying at the Iowa Center for the Book.

Blog

This blog has functioned as an additional medium for members to write about tools, materials, techniques, and travel since 2010. In recent years most authors have opted to contribute to the Guild's print publications (the Journal and Newsletter), but much of the content here is still a valuable resource.
