Open Board Positions for the 2023 Election:
- Vice-President: The Vice-President represents the Guild Chapters on the Executive Board, seeking feedback and coordinating the work of the Chapters. The Vice-President oversees the public relations of the Guild, assembling and coordinating a committee to advertise the activities of the Guild, including the work of the Chapters. The Vice-President coordinates the committee to judge scholarship entries for the Standards of Excellence Seminar and offers feedback to the President on Guild activities and business. Estimated time commitment 4-10 hours per month.
- Secretary: The Secretary attends all meetings of the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee, and the general membership, and records all the proceedings at such meetings. The Secretary gives notice of all meetings of the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee, and the general membership, and all other notices required to be given by law or by the Bylaws. The Secretary sees that all books, reports, statements, certificates and other documents and records required by law to be kept or filed are properly kept or filed, as the case may be.
- Membership Standing Committee Chair: The Membership Chair is responsible for coordinating the committee that maintains membership records for the Guild. Duties of the committee include updating records in the membership database, preparing the membership directory, preparing renewal notices, and sending acknowledgements. A member of the committee will prepare updates of the membership for the Board of Directors and Chapter Chairs and for inclusion in the membership directory. The committee will prepare membership lists for the Treasurer and the Newsletter and Journal editors for mailings.
Other Board Positions up for Re-Election:
- Treasurer: The Treasurer keeps a record of the Guild's finances and has authority to approve bills for payment. The Treasurer oversees maintenance of any checking, savings, and investment accounts of the Guild. The Treasurer prepares a national budget at the beginning of each fiscal year, oversees preparation of periodic financial statements during the course of the year, and submits a year-end report on the financial condition of the Guild. The Treasurer oversees receipts and disbursements for each individual chapter, but chapters are expected to maintain their own financial records and track their income and expenses. The Treasurer will report out to the membership on the Guild's financial health at the Business Meeting held during Standards annually. The Treasurer may engage a third-party bookkeeping service for these duties.
(Current Treasurer, Lawrence Houston, standing for re-election) - Journal Committee Chair: The Journal Chair serves as editor of the annual GBW Journal and coordinates the committee that oversees the annual publication of the Journal. Responsibilities include solicitation, review, acceptance, and editing of submissions; production of press-ready files for printing; solicitation of paid advertising and donations in support of publication; circulation of printed and bound issues to the GBW membership; and promotion of the issue to the wider book arts community. The Journal Chair coordinates with the Exhibitions Chair to facilitate publication of the triennial Traveling Exhibition Catalog for the GBW traveling exhibition as a special issue of the Journal. The Journal Chair participates in executive board meetings and reports on the status of the Journal at each meeting. The Journal Chair prepares an annual budget; reviews all expenses before submitting invoices to the Treasurer; and manages relationships with contracted vendors and independent contractors involved in the production and dissemination of the Journal.
(Current Journal Committee Chair, Kyle Clark, standing for re-election) - Library: The Library Chair is responsible for coordinating activities related to the library collection of the Guild of Book Workers, recently donated to University of Iowa Libraries. The Chair will update the inventory and website information, respond to inquiries from GBW members about the collection, and record all library activities for reporting to the Board of Directors. The Library Chair manages the Guild's online streaming video content through a third-party service provider. The Chair is responsible for tracking income and expenses and will prepare an annual budget as well as an annual report for the Board of Directors.
