Edmund de Waal
In both his pottery and writing, Edmund de Waal uses different types of vessels to explore a wide range of ideas and feelings. His unique ceramic installations cluster multiple porcelain pots in pleasing arrangements within specially constructed containers that likewise serve as vessels for each concept. The cover design aims to capture some of the qualities of de Waal's work including the tonality of the glazing colors, the non-uniform shapes of the pots, and the concept of arraying these vessels along shelves. The red onlays are a reference to his scarlet lacquer ring containing hundreds of porcelain vessels that hangs in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Dorfner binding structure with "floating covers." Sewn on light grey water snake skin supports and attached to wooden boards covered with dark grey stained maple veneer. Spine covered in dark grey water snake skin. Light grey water snake skin endbands. Inlaid aluminum rods and various types of light grey stained maple onlays. Additional onlays in red lokta paper. Dark grey Silsuede endpapers.
8.75 x 10.75 x 1.25 inches; 22 x 27.5 x 3.5 centimeters. Created 2015.
