Susan G. Hulme

Susan G. Hulme, a native Tennessean, has been an editorial art director and designer since the mid-seventies. Hulme opened her first studio, Mind's Eye Graphics, in New York City in 1979 where she worked primarily with design groups and publishers. In addition, she continued her education at the Art Students League of New York and the School of Visual Arts, studying with design luminary Milton Glaser. Hulme has worked as a creative director on many special projects including the Civil Rights Memorial with Maya Lin and the Teaching Tolerance project with the Southern Poverty Law Center. During the last ten years she has intensified focus on the arts and crafts of the handmade book and is currently a fine binding diploma student at the American Academy of Bookbinding. Hulme lives in her hometown of Nashville and runs Bluemarigold Press, which specializes in limited edition books integrating modern and traditional processes.

Kim Stafford, Legacy of Beginning, 2013

Legacy of Beginning is a book of poetry about awakening to the beauty of Bhutan. The spiritual nature of the writing and the elegance of the fine press printing provided an expansive opening for Hulme's design. "From my collection of original charcoal drawings, I chose an image which was transferred onto a salmon colored calfskin and used in the full leather laced-in binding. This technique allowed me to bring my own spontaneous and amorphous imagery to the cover. Finally, gold hand tooling was applied to create the feel of connecting circles." Printing by Larkspur Press.
