Todd Pattison

Todd Pattison is the Senior Book Conservator at the Northeast Document Conservation Center and previously worked as the Collections Conservator at Harvard College Library. Todd first became fascinated with the binding of books in the Boy Scouts while completing his Bookbinding Merit Badge. He studied bookbinding with Fred Jordan in the late 1970s and early 1980s and went on to study with Hugo Peller and Edwin Heim in Ascona, Switzerland.

Edward Lear's Nonsense Songs and Laughable Lyrics, 1935

Edward Lear was a 19th century illustrator, artist, musician, author, and poet who popularized the limerick. His brain was a vessel that held language, imagery, music, and vast imagination and he used that vessel to produce the songs and lyrics that make up the text of this volume. My binding is an attempt to show the creative imagination of this brain, which produced the following: On top of the Crumpetty Tree/ The Quangle Wangle sat,/ But his face you could not see,/ On account of his Beaver Hat.
Leather, gold, collagraph print with drypoint by Nadia Yassa, mylar, blue ink, lizard skin, decorated paper.
