Form Fools Function

The craftsman turned artist rendered this Gothic-style binding dysfunctional with a hinged brass "clasp" that seals the book closed. This book object is a not-so-subtle comment on the stale arguments over art vs. craft and oversimplified definitions of design formation.

Oak boards, alum-tawed pigskin, deerskin lace, brass. 5 x 7.25 x 2 inches. 12.5 x 18.5 x 5 centimeters. Created 2018.

JEFFREY ALTEPETER is a graduate of both the North Bennet Street School and the American Academy of Bookbinding. He teaches bookbinding full-time and is a bookbinder in private practice specializing in leather bindings and boxes.
