Don Glaister

Jacqueline Thurston, Shadowland

Shadowland is published in an edition of six, all bound more or less the same. The text is composed of written reflections and four photographs by the artist Jacqueline Thurston. The meticulously staged photographs are dark and mysterious. The pages are of staggered lengths. The binding design is a portrait of the book's interior: there is a sense of multiple page sizes created by the different sized recessed areas on the front cover (and suggested on the back cover). The materials and their arrangement on the front cover reflect the mystery and dark, yet sparkling quality of the photographs.

Full goatskin with recessed areas. Lizard skin, stingray skin, eel skin, metal ribbon onlays. 14.75 x 13.5 x 0.125 inches. 38 x 34.3 x .4 centimeters. Created 2016.

Jacqueline Thurston, A Hymn to Hands

A Hymn to Hands is the second in the series of editions of artist's books by Jacqueline Thurston. It incorporates three staged photographs and reflections by the artist concerning the presence of hand images in cave paintings. The edition size is six, and the bindings are substantially the same. The binding is conceived as a sister to the Shadowland binding though less abstract. The two graceful hands on the front cover, with their bracelets, suggest an elegant strength passed down through time, while the shapes on the back cover mirror the front and dance and clap with the spirit.

Full goatskin binding with recessed and raised sanded areas. Polished rosewood, aluminum, brass and copper onlays. Brushed and sprayed acrylic paint. Title in gold.14.75 x 13.5 x 0.125 inches. 38 x 34.3 x .4 centimeters. Created 2016.
