Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, Frankenstein; Or, the Modern Prometheus. Illustrated by Barry Moser.

Unlike numerous film versions, Shelley's text does not detail the process by which or the moment when Dr. Frankenstein "infused a spark of being" into his creation. Still, electricity, lightning, storms, and fire are recurring motifs throughout the text.

Vellum over boards: goat processed by binder and classmates at Pergamena. Lightning design in pochoir with acrylic. Hand-titling in palladium and various shades of gold leaf. Three-color, hand-sewn silk endbands, graphite head sprinkled with gold and palladium. St. Armand flexi endpapers. Dust jacket bound in rear. Lightning image derived from Natasha Sinegina (CC-SA4.0). 12 x 9 x 1.25 inches. 30.5 x 23 x 3 centimeters. Created 2018.

KAREN HANMER's work intertwines history, culture, politics, science, and technology. She utilizes traditional and contemporary structures, and the work is often playful in content or format. Hanmer served on the board of the Bonefolder and as the Guild of Book Workers Exhibitions chair. She offers instruction focusing on a solid foundation in basic binding skills.
