The Walk

The Walk centers on a mother walking daily with her daughter, discovering a field of milkweed, and waiting for the seed pods to open. Through the unfolding of words and images, the viewer is invited to reflect on patience, mystery, and darkness - the place where ideas are conceived and formed, much like the seeds in the pod. Featured in the book are close-up images of the milkweed pod, coupled with two narratives - one written by artist/author Valerie Carrigan, the other a diary excerpt by the nineteenth-century Swiss philosopher Henri-Frederik Amiel.

Letterpress and offset lithography on Rives BFK. Monotypes by the artist have been reproduced as offset lithographs for this edition. 8 x 7 x 1 inches. 20 x 18 x 2.5 centimeters. Created 2016.

VALERIE CARRIGAN works out of her studio in an historic mill in western Massachusetts, where she produces prints and artist books exploring the intersection of the natural world and the human spirit. Carrigan is an associate professor of studio art at Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vermont.
