Oliver Herford, The Rubaiyat of a Persian Kitten
Right from the beginning I have associated cats with bookbinding, as my first bookbinding instructor had cats in his studio; one would even sit across his shoulders while he was teaching me. For Formation I wanted to combine these two elements. I still envision a cat watching over me while I work, much like the cat "moon" looking down over the desert landscape on this binding.
Goat leather, gelatin print endpapers. 7 x 5.125 x .75 inches. 18 x 13 x 2 centimeters. Created 2018.

TODD PATTISON first learned bookbinding with Fred Jordan, who was ably assisted by cats. Todd has worked as the collections conservator at Harvard College Library and is currently the senior book conservator at the Northeast Document Conservation Center.
