A Short Course in Recollection

Alphabet blocks and clock parts, fragments of children's tales and 19th-century machinery merge in an intricate toy. When the book is set up and placed in motion, steel balls roll and clatter through a series of ramps, toggles, and switchbacks. Pages are an inch thick, with slotted brass hinges that allow them to move freely or butt together at right angles, so the balls can move between pages. Materials include poplar, birch aircraft plywood, and other woods, clear polyester sheets, and various metals. Collage and assemblage with milk paint, acrylic, and gouache. 10 x 7 x 4 inches, 25.5 x 18 x 10 centimeters. Created 2009.

Susan Collard is an architect and book artist in Portland, Oregon. She has been making one-of-a-kind collaged and constructed artists’ books since 1991. Enchanted by the lyricism of obsolete and prosaic objects, she works from an ever-changing trove of found materials. Susan holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell University and a Master of Fine Arts in poetry from the University of Arizona. Website at www.susancollard.com
