Dreams 2005: I Went to Sleep, Where Did I Go?

Marking time is the core of my artistic endeavor. Since 1982, I’ve recorded each night’s dream in visual form. Yearly records are a reference of ideas and a source for other works. The imagery has varied from circular monoprints to collaged paper to adaptations of illustrations found in antique atlases and dictionaries. This book focuses on the dream as journey. Materials: transfer-print with collage and handwritten text on Cave paper, bound with hemp in a Coptic format. 4 x 4 x 1.25 inches, 10 x 10 x 3 centimeters. Created 2006.

After receiving an MFA from UCLA in 1990, Genie Shenk studied bookbinding with David Brock in San Diego, California. For seventeen years, she taught book arts at San Diego Mesa College and at the Athenaeum Library of Music and the Arts in La Jolla, California. She now focuses on studio work. Her one-of-a-kind artists’ books have been exhibited frequently and are represented in numerous special collections.
