Handmade in Alabama

Handmade in Alabama explores the way our crafts change over time. Through selections from interviews with three generational artisans, the book proposes that over time, our crafts have moved from the primarily utilitarian to the primarily aesthetic. What was once work to meet a need is now leisure to meet a desire. Letterpress and archival ink-jet printed on the artist's handmade 100% cotton paper. Divided into sections, the book consists of hardcover pamphlets, each highlighting one of the generational artisans, and one softcover pamphlet serving as the introduction and extended colophon. Materials: binder’s board, faux vellum, linen thread, handmade cotton paper. 9 x 6 x 0.5 inches, 23 x 15 x 1.5 centimeters. Created 2009.

An Alabama native, Amy LeePard is the daughter of a graphic artist and a printer. Through her love of the book arts, she discovered her parents’ imprint of aesthetic and craftsmanship. With a background in photography, Amy began working with book artist Amy Pirkle, MFA, of Perkolator Press in 2007 to learn binding and case construction. In 2008 Amy began working with Jessica Peterson of Paper Souvenir Press to learn letterpress printing in the studios of Glenn House Sr., Kathy Fetters, and Amos Paul Kennedy Jr. As an undergraduate student at the University of Alabama in interdisciplinary studies of community and art, Amy is currently exploring the art and history of graphic design and typography.
