Pentimento/Marking Time

Images generated and manipulated from 1880’s experiments in physics book. Numbers morphing by putting through physical change into letters forming phrases and sayings about time. Pages ringed with time sayings. Each image unique. Form and materials chosen and expressed resulting from my association with the concepts of John Cage’s indeterminacy and interpenetration: so the use of transparency. See all at once or each “page” independently. Book structured with pages fanned out in order to “read” easily and create a sculptural “round” bookwork. 8.5 x 12 x 5.5 inches, 21.5 x 30.5 x 14 centimeters. Created 2009.

Claire Jeanine Satin, MFA in sculpture, Pratt Institute; NEA/SFA Fellowship; two Florida State Fellowships; FLA $15,000 Consortium Grant; Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture, NYC, awardee; book artist for over forty years; three public art installations; costume and set designs for dance companies. Extensive exhibition history in the USA and Europe. Artist residency, Spring 2009 to Venice, Italy. Numerous collections: the Library of Congress (five works), the Getty Center; MOMA, NYC; the Victoria and Albert Museum; the Sackner Archive; the Jaffe Center; the Joan Flasch Library; the Dallas Library; the Marriott Library, Utah; the Otto Richter Library, the University of Miami; and others.
