One Life, One Book, One Time

A Coptic-sewn book with a full-case binding of brown calfskin is nestled in the belly of a doll. The doll’s body is hand crafted of muslin with an image transfer of an old photo of an Appalachian town on her body. The head and hands of the doll are crafted from white PVC clay and hand painted with acrylic paint. The doll and book are enclosed in a very old box (originally for a gun) with leather sides, silk tufted interior, and a glass door. The doll is a metaphor for a woman, and the book represents her children, her life. 11.5 x 4 x 2.75 inches, 29 x 10 x 7 centimeters. Created 2009.

Kathy Strother has been binding books at her Greenville, South Carolina bindery for the past twenty-five years. Her clientele consists mainly of those requiring the repair and restoration of old books and Bibles. Her expertise also includes one-of-a-kind sculptural pieces, which satisfy her need for self-expression through the medium. In addition to her studio work, Kathy teaches book arts courses at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina.
