Andre Dubus, Broken Vessels, 1991

Bradel binding: text block sewn on five braided linen tapes, with flax Mohawk vellum endpapers, Jewel Stripe paste paper endleaves and pastedowns by Claire Maziarczyk, top edge violet-black, and hand-sewn black and red silk endbands. Black goatskin spine and dark red book cloth over spine and boards with multicolor goatskin and calf onlays and ceramic shard inlays, title onlaid in white calf on spine. Broken Vessels is a collection of essays about the author’s life before and after being hit by a car and crippled. 8.5 x 5.87 x 1.25 inches, 21.5 x 15 x 3 centimeters. Created 2009.

At various times in his life, Gerritt VanDerwerker has worked as a forestry technician, research entomologist, fine art lithographer, proofreader, studio potter, copy editor, and artist. Whether any of these experiences inform his current work is anyone's guess. Largely self-taught (with a little help from his friends), he has pursued bookbinding as a serious amateur since 1994 because a spinal injury prevents him from sitting comfortably and relaxing in a meaningful way.
